Target Stick Training

Here's a You Tube video of target training a horse. I was interested because it seemed to me that once I have my dog trained to follow a target stick it should be much easier to communicate where I want her to go when I do Rally moves. Livvy understands quite a few of them, but others she simply has no idea what I want her to do. I thought if I could be more clear to her, it might be less frustrating for her.

Livvy is not picking it up immediately, but I have Sophie Rose following the target stick on the second lesson.

Terry Arnold at Stepin' Up taught us with a plastic stick which is a piece of U-shaped molding you can get at Home Depot, etc. It just fits a small piece of pup-a-roni or Terry said dogs can't resist liverwurst. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow of the one I use. You should see Effie go over hurdles following the stick. The problem is me who can't walk and chew gum!
