Reflection #2 -- Getting and Keeping Attention

Hi Everyone - Bob, this is a good idea.

Our biggest challenge is that I can't seem to keep MacArthur's attention. I know that I am not consistent enough, I don't practice enough. I got some good feedback from the judges yesterday. I need to change my voice so that he knows when he's done something wrong and be clear with my voice when he's done something right. (I need help with this!)

The judges also said there have to be consequences when he does the wrong thing or isn't listening. It has to be clear to him that I'm not happy with what he's done. Denise suggested that I use a short leash and have it on him while training. It is short enough to loop into the harness and he won't really even know it is there. But when he doesn't do what I ask I can easily grab the leash and correct him.

Also, got some good feedback from Keith. During the maneuvering course yesterday MacArthur was completely distracted and totally ignoring me. He started to leave the area and I followed him - he was leading me rather than the other way around. Keith suggested running in the opposite direction which would have surprised him and gotten his attention back to me. He suggested during training - just heeling training off cart - take off in different directions every once in a while so he realizes that he really has to pay attention because he never knows what I'll do next. So, I'm going to try all of this. And, I'm always open to input and feedback - any suggestions anyone has for me!! :-)

I also need to train in a variety of places with lots of distractions. Just before MacArthur went into the maneuvering course a Bernese Mtn Dog and Berner puppy came along and Mac was completely captivated by them. Then, they were playing outside the 'ring'. Yes it was distracting but he should listen to me regardless. So, training with distractions is a definite must do for us!!

I'm looking forward to what you all have to say too!!
Thanks -
Terry

Wow!! I love Keith's idea and will love to see that in practice. I never would have thought of it.
